FRESH START: HELPING KIDS EASE BACK INTO ROUTINE AFTER THE HOLIDAYS

After a joyful Christmas filled with late mornings, relaxed routines and plenty of celebration, easing back into school life can feel like a big shift for children. A gentle reset can make all the difference as they transition from holiday mode to term time rhythm.

Here are some simple ways to help your child ease into the new year with confidence and calm.

Reintroduce Bedtimes Gradually

Holiday mornings tend to start later, which is perfectly normal. To support an easier return to school, try moving bedtime slightly earlier each night. Small adjustments help children feel well rested and ready for the day ahead.

Talk Through the Week Together

Spend a few minutes chatting about what is coming up. Ask what they are excited for and listen to anything they might be worried about. Knowing the plan helps children feel prepared and reassured.

Reset Morning Routines

A few small habits can transform busy mornings. Choose outfits the night before, pack bags together and set out breakfast items ready for the next day. Predictable routines help children feel secure and reduce stress for the whole family.

Create Simple, Positive Goals

New Year goals do not need to be big or complicated. Encourage your child to choose one or two small things they would like to work on in the new term. It could be practising kindness, reading a little more often or trying a new club. Gentle goals build confidence and motivate them for the weeks ahead.

Be Patient and Encouraging

It is completely normal for the first few days to feel a little unsettled. Celebrate small wins and give lots of reassurance. Children adapt quickly with calm support.

A fresh start is a wonderful opportunity to reset, reconnect and help children feel ready for everything the new term brings.
