HOW TO HELP CHILDREN GIVE BACK AT CHRISTMAS

Christmas is a time filled with excitement, presents and cosy traditions. It is also a wonderful moment to teach children about kindness and the joy of giving back. Small acts of care can make a big difference, and families can come together to help others in simple but meaningful ways.

Here are some ideas to help children share kindness this festive season.

Bake for Neighbours

A batch of biscuits or cupcakes delivered with a handwritten note can brighten someone’s day. Children love helping in the kitchen and it is a lovely opportunity to spread cheer close to home.

Donate Toys or Books

Many charities, schools and community centres accept donations at Christmas. Encourage children to choose items they have outgrown or no longer use. It sparks conversations about gratitude and generosity.

Support School Charity Drives

Lots of schools run food bank collections or fundraising events at this time of year. Get children involved by letting them help choose items to donate or write messages for collection boxes.

Cards for Bravery

This Christmas, our teams took part in a wonderful project inspired by the Cards for Bravery initiative. Staff created handmade cards which were delivered to local children’s hospitals, including Helen and Douglas House. These cards are designed to bring comfort, courage and a little festive sparkle to young patients spending Christmas in hospital. It is a beautiful way to show support and a great activity families can replicate at home.

Children can draw pictures, write cheerful messages or simply decorate a card with bright colours. Even the smallest gesture can mean a lot.

Giving back helps children understand empathy, kindness and the importance of community. This Christmas, a simple act of thoughtfulness could make someone’s day a little brighter.
