Fun and Easy Autumn Recipes for Kids: Seasonal Cooking Ideas

Autumn is the perfect time to get children cooking. The recipes below are simple, tasty, and use seasonal ingredients that are easy to find. Let children help with safe jobs like washing fruit, measuring, stirring, and decorating.


1) Apple Crumble Muffins makes about 12

You will need
• 250 g self raising flour
• 100 g soft light brown sugar
• 1 tsp ground cinnamon
• 2 medium eggs
• 150 ml milk
• 75 g melted butter, cooled
• 2 eating apples, peeled and diced small

Crumble topping
• 40 g plain flour
• 30 g cold butter, diced
• 30 g demerara sugar
• A pinch of cinnamon

Steps

  1. Heat the oven to 180 °C or 160 °C fan, gas 4. Line a 12 hole muffin tin with cases.

  2. Make the crumble. Rub the butter into the flour with your fingertips until it looks like crumbs. Stir in the sugar and a pinch of cinnamon. Set aside.

  3. In a large bowl whisk the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon.

  4. In a jug whisk the eggs, milk, and melted butter.

  5. Tip the wet mix into the dry mix and fold gently until just combined. Stir in the diced apple.

  6. Divide the batter between the cases and sprinkle over the crumble.

  7. Bake for 20 to 22 minutes until risen and golden. Cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then move to a rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.


2) Creamy Pumpkin Soup serves 4

You will need
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 1 onion, chopped
• 1 garlic clove, crushed
• 600 g pumpkin or butternut squash, peeled and diced
• 1 medium carrot, diced
• 700 ml vegetable stock
• 50 ml double cream or milk
• Salt and pepper to taste
• Bread to serve

Steps

  1. Warm the oil in a large pan over a medium heat. Cook the onion for 5 minutes until soft, then add the garlic for 1 minute.

  2. Add the pumpkin and carrot. Stir for 2 minutes to coat in the oil.

  3. Pour in the stock. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15 to 20 minutes until the vegetables are very soft.

  4. Take off the heat. Blend the soup until smooth using a stick blender.

  5. Stir in the cream. Season to taste. If it is too thick, add a splash of hot water.

  6. Ladle into bowls and serve with warm bread. Children can add a swirl of cream on top.


3) Cinnamon Apple Crisps snack for 2 to 3

You will need
• 2 eating apples
• 1 tsp ground cinnamon
• 1 tsp caster sugar optional

Steps

  1. Heat the oven to 110 °C or 90 °C fan, gas ¼. Line two baking trays with baking paper.

  2. Wash the apples. Slice them very thinly into rounds. Remove any pips. No need to peel.

  3. Lay the slices in a single layer on the trays. Mix the cinnamon with the sugar if using, then sprinkle lightly over the apples.

  4. Bake for 1 hour. Turn the slices over, then bake for 30 to 45 minutes more until dry and lightly curled.

  5. Leave to cool on the trays. They will crisp up as they cool. Store in an airtight tub for up to two days.
