DIY Halloween Costumes for Kids: Including Our Famous Bin Bag Creations
At SuperCamps we love getting creative at Halloween. Every year children amaze us with their clever DIY outfits, especially in our famous bin bag costume competitions. You don’t need to spend money on expensive shop-bought costumes — just a few household items and a little imagination.
Here are three simple step-by-step ideas to try at home.
1) Classic Ghost Costume
You will need
• 1 old white sheet
• Scissors
• Black felt tip or black fabric paint
Steps
-
Lay the sheet flat and cut it to the right size for your child, making sure it will reach the ground without tripping them.
-
Cut two holes for eyes. Keep them small and adjust as needed.
-
Use a black felt tip or fabric paint to add a spooky mouth or eyebrows.
-
Pop the sheet over your child’s head and tie gently under the arms if needed to keep it in place.
2) Bin Bag Witch or Wizard
You will need
• 1 large black bin bag
• Scissors
• Masking tape or ribbon
• Coloured paper, stickers, or chalk pens for decoration
• A cardboard cone for a hat (optional)
Steps
-
Cut holes in the bin bag for the head and arms. Trim the bottom to the right length.
-
Use scissors to cut jagged edges at the bottom for a tattered effect.
-
Decorate with stickers, chalk pens, or coloured paper shapes. Stars and moons work really well.
-
Add a ribbon or masking tape belt around the waist.
-
Make a quick pointed hat from a piece of cardboard rolled into a cone, or use a paper party hat.
3) Spooky Bat
You will need
• 1 black T-shirt
• 1 sheet of black card or felt
• Scissors
• Safety pins or a needle and thread
• A headband
Steps
-
Cut bat wing shapes from the black card or felt, long enough to reach from wrist to waist.
-
Attach the wings to the arms and sides of the T-shirt using safety pins or by stitching lightly.
-
Cut two small bat ears from the card or felt and tape or glue them onto a headband.
-
Dress your child in the T-shirt and black trousers or leggings. When they stretch out their arms, the bat wings will spread.
A note from camp
Our DIY bin bag costume competitions are always a highlight of October at SuperCamps. Kids show just how creative they can be with the simplest materials. Whether it’s a ghost, a bat, or a witch made from a bin bag, what matters most is the fun of making something together.
