Resetting the Routine: Tips for a Smooth Return to School After Summer

The long summer days are behind us, and suddenly it’s back to alarm clocks, school shoes, and packed lunches. While the return to school is exciting, it can also feel like a bit of a shock to the system — for children and parents alike!

To help make the transition a little easier, here are some simple tips for easing back into routine after summer:

1. Bring back bedtime (gradually)

Late nights and lazy mornings are part of summer’s charm, but early school starts can be tough after weeks of freedom. Try bringing bedtime forward by 15 minutes every couple of days until you’re back on track. It makes those morning wake-ups far less painful!

2. Start the morning routine before school starts

Practice makes perfect — even with school mornings. A few days before term begins, set alarms, get dressed, and eat breakfast at “school time.” It helps children (and parents) adjust without the pressure of actually having to rush out the door.

3. Involve children in getting organised

Let children pick out their stationery, label their new uniform, or help pack their school bag. Having some ownership over the prep can get them excited and ease first-day nerves.

4. Create a calm evening routine

Homework, dinner, play, bath, bed — evenings can get busy quickly. Setting a rhythm helps children feel settled and ready for the next day. A short wind-down routine before bed (reading, listening to music, or simply chatting about the day) makes a big difference.

5. Focus on the positives

A new school year means fresh opportunities — new teachers, new friends, and new things to learn. Talk about what your child is most looking forward to, and remind them of all the fun they’ll have.

6. Don’t forget yourself!

Back-to-school is a big adjustment for parents too. Take a moment to plan your own routine — whether that’s a quiet coffee after school drop-off, a gym session, or simply a bit of breathing space. A calmer parent makes for a calmer child.

Finding the balance again

The return to school doesn’t have to be stressful. With a few small tweaks, you can help children slide back into routine while keeping the excitement of summer alive in your family.

Here’s to a smooth start to the new term — and plenty of happy school days ahead!
