REDUCING SCREEN TIME DURING THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS

Why Screen Time Increases in Summer

Summer holidays are exciting, but they can also present a challenge for parents. With six weeks to fill and routines temporarily on hold, it can be tempting for screens to become the default activity. Whether it is gaming, streaming or scrolling, many families find screen time gradually creeping up as the holidays progress.

It’s About Engagement, Not Restriction

The good news is that children do not necessarily need less screen time. Often, they simply need more reasons to put their devices down.

When children are engaged, active and having fun, screens quickly become less appealing. That is why summer is the perfect opportunity to introduce new experiences, outdoor adventures and creative challenges that capture children's imagination in different ways.

The Role of Boredom and Creativity

One of the biggest reasons children turn to screens is boredom. While boredom can sometimes spark creativity, it can also lead children straight to a tablet or television when there are no exciting alternatives available. Providing a variety of activities throughout the holidays helps keep children engaged and encourages them to try something different.

Active Play and Creative Alternatives

Outdoor play remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce screen time. Running, exploring, playing games and spending time with friends naturally encourage children to focus on the world around them rather than the one on a screen. Creative activities can have a similar effect. Arts and crafts, imaginative games and hands-on projects give children the opportunity to create, experiment and express themselves.

Life at Camp Without Screens

At SuperCamps, screen-free fun is part of everyday life. Children are busy earning Colour Points, taking part in team challenges, meeting SuperSaurus, learning new skills and enjoying activities with friends. By the end of the day, many children have barely thought about their devices because they have been fully immersed in camp life.

Finding a Healthy Balance

Importantly, reducing screen time does not have to mean banning screens altogether. Technology has its place, and many children enjoy using it responsibly. The key is finding a healthy balance between screen-based entertainment and real-world experiences.

Summer holidays provide the perfect opportunity for children to discover new interests, build confidence and create memories that last far longer than any video or game.

A day filled with adventure, creativity and friendship leaves very little room for screens. More importantly, it gives children something far more valuable to remember.
