Worcester News- Summer camps: a parent’s guide
Super Camps, one of the UK’s largest summer camp operators, will be running an activity day camp in Worcester at St Mary’s Convent School.
Katie McIntosh, Super Camps’ regional manager, said: “As a parent, the thought of packing the whole of the summer holiday with entertainment and fun can be an extremely daunting task. Together with working full-time, the prospect of summer can seem stressful and far from enjoyable.”
The camp offers children the opportunity to take part in activities that combine sport, arts and play for as long as the whole holiday or as little as one day.
A day camp costs between £29 and £32.
Super Camps’ activities include swimming, karting, trampolining, cooking and art. Children also get the opportunity to play and have fun with other children of the same age which can help their development skills.

Morag Groves, general manager of multi-activity Super Camps, says: “With all the current press about the risk of childhood obesity and declining child fitness, activity centres ensure that children are kept active during their school break.”
Dr Gwyneth Doherty-Sneddon, child psychologist at the University of Stirling, believes that holiday activities “can be a positive experience if the children are in a controlled and emotionally supportive environment”. She thinks there are many skills to be gained by such experiences. “Adapting to a new environment is challenging for children, as well as connecting with a new set of people – all these things will develop their social skills, particularly useful for less confident children.”

Some parents may feel apprehensive about their child going to camp for the first time, or may worry that their child will not enjoy some of the activities, or will be too shy. This is understandable as attending camp for the first time is often the first time a child will be away from his or her parents. If this is the case parents can always arrange for two friends to attend a camp together; this way they may initially feel more confident. Many camps are also tailored to suit the needs of specific children, for instance with a sporty or artistic emphasis, so a camp can be chosen where your child will feel most comfortable.
